Spring break is around the corner and while your college days are long gone, nothing says you cannot take advantage of the season to plan something memorable for yourself.
When you read about staycations a.k.a staying back rather than travelling somewhere on holiday, there is the sense that it’s an unwelcome alternative for those who cannot afford a real vacation.
While travel can be a life-changing experience, staycations can be the same.
Five Benefits of a Staycation
Here are five obvious benefits of a staycation:
- It doesn’t disrupt your life as much as travelling would.
- It’s much easier to plan and execute.
- It’s cheaper and usually more wholesome.
- You’re in control of almost every aspect.

How to set the scene for your epic staycation over Spring Break
Like with anything, creating an unforgettable experience starts with having a great plan in place.
You wouldn’t just book a ticket to visit some country and travel on the same day, would you? So why would you also be half-assed about your staycation?
Please don’t do that.
Creating the magic starts with certain key elements take will take your day from ordinary to extraordinary.
A staycation can be limited to a particular geographic location – your city or to a particular place – your home.
We will focus on the one limited to your home.
Four Elements of an Unforgettable Staycation
Refreshments
You may not believe me, but food is the most important element of a staycation. Though it is often the one we forget. This usually leaves us frustrated, blaming the fact that we are at home, rather than the fact that we just failed to plan properly.
So, what would you like to eat during your staycation?
You can create menu of the things you would love to eat. Remember you don’t have to cook. Try out meal box subscriptions like Hellofresh and Blue Apron or just order in.
You should also have a large of supply of snacks.

A charcuterie board is always a great idea; it is a delectable mix of sweet, savoury, soft, crunchy, and of course, creamy snacks.
You can get build your own snack mix with one of these charcuterie boards.
Entertainment
Another key element of your staycation is what you do during that time. Whether it is a one day or one week bout, you need to have an idea of the fun activities you would like to do.
There is no need to plan out your entire itinerary, (ain’t nobody got time for that!), but you should have an idea of what you want to do during key blocks of time.
Here are some ideas:
- Games (outdoor and indoor)
- Movies (there are some amazing options on Amazon Prime)
- Books (get some great choices here + a free trial)
- Real life conversations (if you live with other people)
- Naps and generous sleep time
- Music – create an unforgettable playlist. This will become your staycation soundtrack.
- Dance marathon

Fashion
You may not like this one but here’s we go: just because you’re on a staycation shouldn’t mean your hygiene takes a backseat or you dress like a slob.
On the contrary, you should dress as you would on a vacation (or even better). This does something to your mind (it takes it more seriously) and elevates the entire experience.
More so, you probably want to document key moments of your experience so dress the part.
I would suggest you go for a “comfortable and chic” ensemble.

Create a theme.
I know this should probably have come first, but it’s down here because, while it’s important, it’s easy to get lost in myriad of trying to select a theme for your staycation.
See, this is a nice to have. It can turn a lazy weekend into an adventure. However, it should not becloud the other elements mentioned above.
Here are some theme ideas for my fellow millennials and Gen Xers:
- Indiana Jones
- 80’s diva
- 90’s cool
- 2000’s rock
